State rules to know
Tires
Maryland Department of the Environment allows no more than 5 tires per year per resident or business to be dropped off without a Scrap Tire Haulers License; counties such as Frederick, Cecil, Harford and Washington enforce this at the gate. Official rule ↗
Out-of-county waste and ID
Most county sites accept only waste generated in that county and ask for a driver's license or other proof of residency; for example Frederick and Howard accept no out-of-county waste. Official rule ↗
Mattresses
Montgomery County has a mattress and box spring recycling program and, from July 1, 2026, restricts commercial mattress loads at its transfer station; Frederick limits residents to 6 mattress units a year at the normal fee. Official rule ↗
Household hazardous waste is mostly handled through county programs: permanent drop-offs at Montgomery's Shady Grove, Baltimore County's three acceptance facilities (limited item lists), Howard's Alpha Ridge (Saturdays April-November) and seasonal collection events in Harford, Cecil and Frederick counties.
Before you go
Can anyone use these facilities?
67 listed facilities are confirmed open to the public. Others may limit access by residency or customer type. Check the individual access rules.
How much does a dump run cost?
Compare the listed minimum charges and item fees. A missing price means call to confirm, and an accepted item may still carry the normal load fee.
