Dumps & landfills in California

California dumping runs through county and city solid-waste systems: many rural counties run free or low-cost transfer stations for residents, while urban areas rely on city transfer stations and private operators (Recology, Republic, WM, GreenWaste) with per-ton gate fees and item surcharges for mattresses, tires and freon appliances. Most public sites check residency, and many take hazardous waste only at separate county household hazardous waste centers. Details below are confirmed on official pages only for a minority of sites; the rest are listed as drafts to confirm.

State rules to know

Organic waste

SB 1383 requires California to cut landfilled food and other organic waste; cities and counties run organics collection and landfills/transfer stations route green waste to separate areas or rates. Official rule ↗

Electronics

Covered electronic waste goes through the state's Covered Electronic Waste Recycling Program; since Jan 1, 2026 SB 1215 adds covered battery-embedded products. Use CalRecycle's eRecycle directory to find a collector. Official rule ↗

Mattresses

California's Mattress Stewardship Program (run by the Mattress Recycling Council) ensures used mattresses, box springs and futons are reused, recycled or properly disposed. Some sites still charge a handling fee. Official rule ↗

Tires

Waste tires are regulated under the California Tire Recycling Act; use a registered tire recycler or hauler. Many county sites limit the number of tires per visit and charge per tire. Official rule ↗

Household hazardous waste is not accepted with regular trash at most landfills. Counties run permanent HHW centers or events, usually free for residents of that county (for example Orange, Riverside, Sonoma, San Francisco). Residency proof is often required and businesses are excluded.

How much does a dump run cost?

Compare the listed minimum charges and item fees. A missing price means call to confirm, and an accepted item may still carry the normal load fee.
