Plan your drop-off

Dumps & landfills in South Carolina

Most South Carolina residents dump at free county convenience centers or staffed drop-off sites, usually requiring proof of county residency, while landfills and transfer stations are county-run or operated by WM, Republic, GFL and Waste Connections. Many counties publish hours but few post gate fees online. State law keeps tires, appliances, yard waste, electronics, motor oil and car batteries out of landfills, so centers collect them separately.

State rules to know

Landfill disposal bans

The S.C. Solid Waste Policy and Management Act of 1991 bans electronic waste, motor oil, yard waste, car batteries, white goods (appliances) and tires from landfills; counties collect them separately at drop-off sites. Official rule ↗

Residency checks

County convenience centers are generally for residents of that county only; Charleston, Greenville, Richland, Horry and Beaufort all require proof of residency or a county pass, and commercial loads are turned away. Official rule ↗

Tire limits at drop-offs

Charleston County convenience centers take residents' tires with no commercial tires; the county's newsletter lists a 4-tire maximum per visit. Richland's Caughman Road site limits tires to 5. Official rule ↗

Several counties take household hazardous waste at staffed centers (Charleston convenience centers accept paint, batteries, light bulbs and motor oil); Greenville says call (864) 243-9672 for hazardous materials. Other counties' HHW programs were not verified.
