Dumps & landfills in North Dakota

North Dakota disposal is mostly city- and county-run landfills with posted per-ton rates and small minimum charges, plus a few private regional landfills that serve haulers. Fargo, Bismarck, Minot and Williston run full public landfills; smaller towns often open only a few days a week. Tires, freon appliances and mattresses usually carry per-item fees, and many sites charge non-residents more.

State rules to know

Scrap tires

North Dakota has no tire-specific disposal program. Landfills may legally bury tires but many decline to, and open dumping, stockpiling and open burning of tires are illegal, so expect per-tire fees or refusal at many sites. Official rule ↗

Pesticides

The North Dakota Department of Agriculture holds free Project Safe Send pesticide collections each summer; landfills and HHW sites generally do not take pesticides. Call 1-800-242-7535 for dates. Official rule ↗

Metal in landfills

Williston's landfill states North Dakota law requires metal to be separated from garbage; loads with mixed metal can be rejected or charged a metal fee. Official rule ↗

Permanent household hazardous waste centers are in Fargo (free to Cass County and Valley City residents) and at the Bismarck landfill (free to Bismarck residents, fees for others). Elsewhere, call the local landfill; statewide pesticide collections run in summer.
