State rules to know
State solid waste oversight
The New Mexico Environment Department's Resource Recovery Bureau regulates landfills and solid waste under the Solid Waste Act and the Solid Waste Rules; facilities need a state permit to operate. Official rule ↗
Scrap tires
Large scrap-tire deliveries must travel with the state-approved manifest; Albuquerque requires it for scrap tires at Cerro Colorado Landfill, and Santa Fe's agency requires manifests for 10 or more tires. Most sites also cap tires per customer. Official rule ↗
Santa Fe County recycling
Recycling is mandatory for Santa Fe County residents using county convenience centers; violations can draw fines of $25 to $200. Permits or bag tags are required and loads must be secured. Official rule ↗
Out-of-county waste
Many New Mexico sites take waste only from their own county or authority area (Santa Fe agency sites, Santa Fe County centers, NWNMRSWA charges more for out-of-area waste). Bring proof of residency. Official rule ↗
Santa Fe's BuRRT takes household hazardous waste Fridays and Saturdays for Santa Fe residents; Sandoval County's HHW program was suspended as of March 23, 2026. Albuquerque convenience centers do not take hazardous waste; call 311 for options.
Before you go
Can anyone use these facilities?
10 listed facilities are confirmed open to the public. Others may limit access by residency or customer type. Check the individual access rules.
How much does a dump run cost?
Compare the listed minimum charges and item fees. A missing price means call to confirm, and an accepted item may still carry the normal load fee.
