Plan your drop-off

Dumps & landfills in New Jersey

New Jersey's public disposal is run by county authorities and utilities authorities (Atlantic, Cape May, Burlington, Monmouth, Cumberland, Warren, Sussex, Morris), mostly open to anyone but limited to waste from that county. Expect to bring ID, fill out a waste-origin form, pay by the ton (about $86 to $113) with a $5 to $10 minimum, and skip rental vehicles. Many sites require a hard hat and vest. Household hazardous waste is mostly collected at county events.

State rules to know

Rental vehicles and commercial plates

Rented vehicles (U-Haul, Home Depot trucks and similar) and commercial-plated vehicles are turned away at most county sites unless the vehicle is NJDEP-registered. Personal vehicles of 9,000 lb GVWR or less hauling their own household waste need no decal. Official rule ↗

County waste only (flow control)

County landfills and transfer stations generally accept only waste generated in their own county and ask you to complete a waste origin form at the scale house. Official rule ↗

Electronics and tires

Covered electronics (computers, TVs) cannot be disposed of in landfills under New Jersey's e-waste law, so sites route them to free or low-cost drop-offs. Tires are a recyclable and are charged per tire with small limits per visit. Official rule ↗

Hard hat and vest

Some sites such as ACUA and the Morris County transfer stations require a hard hat and high-visibility vest, which the scale house may lend. Official rule ↗

Permanent household hazardous waste sites exist in Burlington (Florence) and Monmouth (Tinton Falls) counties, plus an appointment-only site at Mount Olive in Morris County. Ocean, Sussex, Cumberland and Hunterdon counties use scheduled collection events, usually residents-only and free for small amounts.

How much does a dump run cost?

Compare the listed minimum charges and item fees. A missing price means call to confirm, and an accepted item may still carry the normal load fee.
