Plan your drop-off

Dumps & landfills in Nebraska

Lincoln runs its own landfill and a small-vehicle transfer station, Hastings, Kearney, Grand Island, Columbus, North Platte and a few other cities run theirs, and most of the Omaha area relies on private transfer stations and the Sarpy County transfer station. Rural counties mostly use regional landfills and village transfer stations or collection sites. Fees are typically a per-ton rate with a small-load minimum, plus per-item charges for tires and appliances.

State rules to know

Tires

Tires cannot be disposed of in landfills (in effect since September 1995); they must go to a separate tire drop-off, usually for a per-tire fee. Official rule ↗

Covered loads

Nebraska law (1993 LB 575, Section 28-39-6.129) requires every load being transported to be covered; uncovered loads are charged extra at facilities such as the Sarpy County Transfer Station. Official rule ↗

Business and industrial hazardous waste

Hazardous waste from business, industry and government may not be brought to the transfer station; contact the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality. Official rule ↗

Lincoln and Lancaster County residents can use the HazToGo household hazardous waste center at 5101 N 48th St (hours not confirmed here). Omaha-area residents are directed to the UnderTheSink program. Landfills and transfer stations generally do not take household chemicals or paint.
