Dumps & landfills in Montana

Montana runs trash through county landfills and solid waste districts, with unmanned container (green box) sites in rural areas. Many sites are for county residents or permit holders only, and fees range from free for residents (Lincoln, Beaverhead) to roughly $27 to $126 a ton elsewhere. Always check the county page before hauling.

State rules to know

Tires

Waste tires are Group III solid waste, not hazardous waste, and are managed under the Montana Solid Waste Management Act. There is no statewide tire ban from landfills, so each landfill sets its own limits and fees. Official rule ↗

Electronics

Montana has no law requiring electronics to be recycled or banning them from landfills. Whether a site takes TVs and computers, and what it charges, is a local decision. Official rule ↗

Household hazardous waste

There is no statewide program. DEQ licenses collection events and sites, and counties and cities run their own drop-offs. Official rule ↗

Montana has no statewide household hazardous waste program. Local options include Bozeman (free, Tue-Sat), Flathead County (monthly, third Saturday, appointment), Billings landfill, Lake County (small amounts by appointment) and Missoula's Home ReSource (by appointment).
