Plan your drop-off

Dumps & landfills in Missouri

Missouri residents mostly dump at city or county transfer stations, city-run recycling and yard-waste centers, and private landfills or transfer stations run by WM, Republic and GFL. The big cities run resident-only sites (St. Louis City stations are free to residents with ID; Springfield's Noble Hill landfill charges $43.85 per ton with a $20 minimum). Yard waste, major appliances, waste oil and lead-acid batteries are banned from Missouri landfills, so expect to take them to a separate drop-off.

What are you getting rid of?

State rules to know

Yard waste

Yard waste may not be disposed of in a Missouri solid waste disposal area, except bioreactor landfills that use landfill gas for electricity. Grass, leaves and brush go to compost or yard-waste sites instead. Official rule ↗

Appliances, waste oil and car batteries

Major appliances, waste oil and lead-acid batteries cannot be put in a landfill, so landfills turn them away. Official rule ↗

Scrap tires

Scrap tires must go to a permitted scrap tire collection center, processing or end-user facility; hauling them for profit or dumping them elsewhere is a misdemeanor. Official rule ↗

Permanent household hazardous waste sites exist in the St. Louis area (hhwstl.com, reservation required; St. Louis City/County and Jefferson County households), Kansas City (KC Water, free to Kansas City and participating-community residents), Springfield (appointment only) and, May to September, St. Charles County's Recycle Works Central. Most other counties rely on periodic collection events.

Can anyone use these facilities?

8 listed facilities are confirmed open to the public. Others may limit access by residency or customer type. Check the individual access rules.

How much does a dump run cost?

Compare the listed minimum charges and item fees. A missing price means call to confirm, and an accepted item may still carry the normal load fee.
