What are you getting rid of?
State rules to know
Yard waste
Yard waste may not be placed in mixed municipal solid waste or a disposal facility (metro area since 1990, rest of state since 1992). Use a compost site or yard-waste drop-off. In metro counties, yard waste bags delivered to a transfer or compost site must be compostable plastic. Official rule ↗
Major appliances
Major appliances may not be placed in regular garbage or landfilled; they must be recycled or reused, and counties must offer households a way to recycle them (expect an item fee at drop-off sites). Official rule ↗
TVs and monitors
Electronic products containing a cathode-ray tube (older TVs and monitors) may not go in regular garbage; take them to a recycling or electronics drop-off. Official rule ↗
Most counties run a household hazardous waste site or collection days for residents; the seven Twin Cities metro counties (Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Ramsey, Scott, Washington) share access to each other's facilities, but proof of residency is required and businesses are not accepted.
Before you go
Can anyone use these facilities?
13 listed facilities are confirmed open to the public. Others may limit access by residency or customer type. Check the individual access rules.
How much does a dump run cost?
Compare the listed minimum charges and item fees. A missing price means call to confirm, and an accepted item may still carry the normal load fee.
