Dumps & landfills in Louisiana

Louisiana disposal is mostly run by parishes through staffed compactor or convenience sites and parish landfills, with private landfills run by Republic, WM and Waste Connections. Many parish sites are free for residents and ask for ID or a utility bill showing a parish address. This first pass covers 86 facilities; the strongest coverage is Caddo (18 compactor sites), DeSoto, Cameron, East Baton Rouge North Landfill and Bossier City. Most large metro parishes (Jefferson, Orleans, St. Tammany, Lafayette, Calcasieu, Tangipahoa, Livingston, Rapides, Ouachita) still need a second pass because their official sites were blocked, down or silent.

State rules to know

Waste tires

Individuals may bring no more than 5 waste tires per day to an authorized waste tire collection center. Unauthorized tire disposal is illegal. Official rule ↗

Open burning and illegal dumping

It is illegal, even on private land, to burn solid waste or to dispose of solid waste or tires on the ground. Report dumping to LDEQ. Official rule ↗

Households without pickup

Households without trash pickup should take household waste to a permitted solid waste disposal facility. Official rule ↗

Louisiana has no statewide permanent household hazardous waste program; most parishes use periodic Household Hazardous Materials Collection Days, which LDEQ lists on its recycling resources page. New Orleans takes hazardous waste at its Saturday drop-off on Elysian Fields, and Lafayette's permanent center is still under construction.
