State rules to know

Tires, appliances and yard waste are banned from landfill garbage in many areas

The Solid Waste Agency of Linn County bans tires, appliances, TVs and monitors, yard waste and cardboard from its landfill and sends them to recycling instead. Other agencies set their own lists, so ask before you load. Official rule ↗

Loads must be covered and tarped, and some sites require a safety vest

Several Iowa landfills charge an uncovered-load fee, and sites like Linn County and Scott Area require a Hi-Vis vest at the working face. Official rule ↗

Many Iowa landfill agencies run a household hazardous materials site, often free for residents and sometimes by appointment. Metro Waste Authority uses the Bondurant drop-off, Linn County takes hazardous materials at no charge, and Sioux City takes them Tuesday to Thursday. Call first to confirm.
