Dumps & landfills in Indiana

Indiana is organized by county and multi-county solid waste management districts, which run landfills, transfer stations and staffed drop-off or convenience centers, often for county residents only. Private companies (Republic, WM, Rumpke, GFL) operate many of the big landfills and transfer stations, and most do not publish resident rates online. Typical posted fees run roughly $39-$65 per ton or about $50 per pickup load, with separate surcharges for tires, TVs and freon appliances.

State rules to know

Yard waste

Indiana bans yard waste (limbs and clearing debris over three feet long) from landfill disposal; unbagged vegetative matter is also excluded. Many counties run separate compost yards. Official rule ↗

Tires

Whole waste tires are excluded from municipal landfills; counties and landfills take them separately for a per-tire fee. Official rule ↗

Electronics

Indiana households, public schools and small businesses may not throw many electronics in the trash (in effect since January 1, 2011); use an e-waste recycler or county program, which may charge for TVs and monitors. Official rule ↗

Lead-acid batteries

Lead-acid batteries are excluded from municipal landfills; retailers must take back old batteries when you buy a new one. Official rule ↗

Most Indiana counties handle household hazardous waste through their solid waste district, either a permanent drop-off site (such as Hamilton County, residents only) or scheduled Tox-Away collection days. Check the district page before you load the car.
