Dumps & landfills in Illinois

Illinois coverage is a first pass: 106 places listed, 30 with confirmed details, mostly in northern Illinois (Cook, Kane, Ogle, Winnebago and Lake counties) plus a few downstate sites. Most dumping happens at private landfills and transfer stations that charge by the ton, often with a 1-ton minimum, so a single trunk-load can cost $30 to $100. Many large operators block their rate pages, so a lot of listings show name and address only; call before you go.

What are you getting rid of?

State rules to know

Tires, appliances and batteries

Illinois landfills may not take whole tires (banned since July 1, 1994), appliances unless the refrigerant and other components are removed (since July 1, 1994), or lead-acid batteries (since Sept 1, 1990). Official rule ↗

Electronics

Covered electronics (computers, TVs, monitors, printers, game consoles) are banned from Illinois landfills as of Jan 1, 2026. Use an e-waste collection site instead. Official rule ↗

Yard waste

Yard waste is banned from Illinois landfills, so it goes to a compost yard or landscape-waste site. The Illinois EPA ban is cited by Peoria County. Official rule ↗

Permanent household hazardous waste sites: Naperville, Rockford (free for Illinois residents), Chicago Goose Island, SWALCO in Gurnee (appointment) and Madison County in Wood River (appointment). Other areas use one-day Illinois EPA events, usually 8 AM to 3 PM, with pre-registration. Latex paint and used cooking oil are generally not taken at HHW sites; PaintCare runs a statewide paint takeback.

Can anyone use these facilities?

14 listed facilities are confirmed open to the public. Others may limit access by residency or customer type. Check the individual access rules.

How much does a dump run cost?

Compare the listed minimum charges and item fees. A missing price means call to confirm, and an accepted item may still carry the normal load fee.
