Dumps & landfills in Delaware

The Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA), a state-created authority, runs nearly every public dump site in Delaware: three landfills, three transfer stations, five pay-per-bag collection stations and several recycling centers. Landfills and transfer stations charge $80.00 per ton with a $7.50 minimum per vehicle, while collection stations charge $1.00 per bag. Only Delaware-generated waste is accepted, and recycling, electronics and household hazardous waste drop-off are free for residents.

State rules to know

Yard waste

Yard waste has been banned from Delaware landfills since 2007, so it must be kept separate from trash. DSWA sites take it in a separate area, and a mixed load can be refused or surcharged. Official rule ↗

Out-of-state waste

All DSWA landfills, transfer stations and collection stations accept Delaware-generated waste only; out-of-state waste is not accepted. Official rule ↗

Tires

DSWA transfer stations take up to 4 passenger tires per load; larger tire loads are charged $280.00 per ton at DSWA sites. Official rule ↗

Latex paint

Latex paint is not hazardous in Delaware. Dry it out with kitty litter or sand and put it in the trash, or bring it liquid to a monthly DSWA latex paint collection. Official rule ↗

DSWA collects household hazardous waste free for Delaware residents every week at four sites: Delaware Recycling Center (Saturdays), Newark Recycling Center (Wednesdays), Cheswold (Fridays) and Southern Recycling Center at Jones Crossroads (Mondays), plus Saturday events around the state. Explosives are not accepted at weekly collections. Confirm times at dswa.com or 1-800-404-7080.
