Dumps & landfills in Alaska

Alaska has no statewide dump network: each borough or city runs its own sites, and many villages have a single landfill. This first pass covers the Anchorage, Kenai Peninsula, Mat-Su and Fairbanks areas in detail, plus the main landfills in Denali, Ketchikan and Kodiak. Juneau, Sitka, Bethel, Nome, Kotzebue and many rural boroughs are listed as drafts only because their official pages were not readable. Rural sites often close in winter, so call before you go.

State rules to know

Used oil and hazardous waste

Used oil and regulated hazardous waste may only go to a facility approved by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation for that waste, or be handled under a state permit. Small-quantity businesses may use certain approved landfills for non-acute hazardous waste. Official rule ↗

Vehicles

Anyone disposing of a vehicle or construction equipment must remove all batteries and drain all fluids first, and may not use it to stabilize a slope or prevent erosion. Official rule ↗

Hauling loads

Loads must be contained during transport, and if waste spills you must promptly pick it up. Tarp or secure what you haul. Official rule ↗

Medical waste

Medical waste must be managed so it does not spread disease; landfills may take it only if it has been treated (autoclave, other decontamination, or medical waste incinerator). Official rule ↗

Anchorage residents can drop off household hazardous waste free (up to 40 lb) at the Anchorage Regional Landfill and the Central Transfer Station. Mat-Su takes it free up to 40 lb at the Central Landfill; Fairbanks takes residential hazardous waste free at the Central Recycling Facility; Kodiak takes up to 40 lb at its landfill. The Kenai Peninsula takes hazardous waste only on collection days.

Can anyone use these facilities?

28 listed facilities are confirmed open to the public. Others may limit access by residency or customer type. Check the individual access rules.

How much does a dump run cost?

Compare the listed minimum charges and item fees. A missing price means call to confirm, and an accepted item may still carry the normal load fee.
